Tips on How to Care for Your Retainer

Posted .

Do you want to maintain a strong, healthy and beautiful smile? If so, you need to clean and care for your orthodontic retainer. Our orthodontist, Dr. Traci Saito, recommends doing so because your retainer can keep your teeth in their proper positions. So, if you want to keep your retainer in tip-top shape, it’s best to do the following things:

-Rinse your retainer regularly: It’s important to rinse your retainer with water as soon as you remove it from your smile. This is recommended because it helps you avoid plaque and bacteria buildup on the appliance, which can help you avoid dental issues and maintain a top-notch smile.

-Deeply clean your retainer often: You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap, a denture brush or denture cleaner to clean your appliance. Whatever you do, don’t use products that have abrasives. This is recommended because abrasives can scratch and ruin the retainer.

-Keep your retainer in a safe place: A safe place could be tucked away in your bathroom drawer or high in your bathroom cabinet. This is recommended because hot environments can melt the retainer. Low storage places increase your chances of the family pet finding it. Whether you believe it or not, dogs love to chew retainers.
